Hebrew is a Semitic language spoken by about 7 800 000 people mainly in Israel. The earliests evidences about the language date back to X centiry B.C. The Torah and the main part of the Old Testament are written in Hebrew. In the beginning of the first millenium Hebrew ceases to be a spoken language and is used mainly for religious and scientific purposes. The contemporary Hebrew is formed in the course of Haskalah movement in the middle of IX century based on the classic Hebrew that dates back to VI century B.C.
